Rising on Wings of Faith
An excerpt from When God Steps In
I enjoy feeding wild life in the garden area outside our home. Rabbits, squirrels, and birds come every day to eat seeds, nuts, and berries. One evening, I noticed a Blue Jaysitting alone after all the other birds had gone. I eased up to it. The Blue Jay was alive, but barely moving. It appeared to be wounded.
When dusk came, the Blue Jay managed to fly into the low branches of a nearby pear tree. The next day, it returned to my garden and remained fairly still, only moving to drink, or eat the crushed peanuts I set out.
At dusk the second day, the Blue Jay seemed exhausted. I watched from the screen door, hoping it would fly back to the pear tree for the night. The helpless bird looked up from where it sat on the ground, and appeared to focus on me. Then, it actually tried to fly to me. Unable to, it started hopping on one leg in my direction.
I was shocked. I couldn't believe a Blue Jay bird would do that. Perhaps it knew I was watching over it and trying to help. It seemed the bird trusted me for its protection that night.
Having never rehabilitated a wild bird before, I had no idea what to do.
